NC DMV forms and paperwork.

Learn what North Carolina DMV forms and paperwork you need to sell a car in NC.

NC MVR forms and other DMV paperwork.

North Carolina form printing for the sale of a motor vehicle is quite simple. Practically every form you'd need can be produced and printed on regular 8 1/2 x 11 plain paper, except the NC MVR-2.

For car dealers there are four major types of deals: Wholesale, Cash, Outside Finance, and Buy Here Pay Here. Each one needs a slightly different stack of forms.

The 4 NC DMV forms in every deal

NC MVR-1Title Application
NC MVR-2Title Reassignment
NC MVR-180Odometer Disclosure
NC MVR-181Damage Disclosure

Heads up on the MVR-2. It is a secure form. You can't download it from the DMV website and you can't print it on plain paper. Pick up blank MVR-2 forms at your local NC tag office and hand-feed them through your laser printer. A DMS prints the deal data onto the secure form for you instead of handwriting it.

FAQ

Where dealers get NC forms.

Where do I get NC DMV dealer forms?

You have three options. 1) Use a DMS like KGI Dealer Solutions to print each form populated with your deal data - plain paper for everything except the MVR-2 secure form, which the DMS prints onto through your laser printer. 2) Download the public forms from the NC DMV forms library and fill them in by hand. 3) Walk into your local NC tag office and pick up paper copies. Either way you'll need to pick up MVR-2 blanks from the tag office since the DMV doesn't post that form online.

What is the MVR-2, and why can't I just print it on plain paper?

The NC MVR-2 is the Dealer's Reassignment of Title and is a secure form. The DMV controls the paper stock to prevent fraud, so it's not available as a download and it cannot be printed on plain paper. Pick up blank MVR-2 forms from your local tag office and hand-feed them through your laser printer. A DMS like KGI prints the deal data straight onto the secure form, so you skip the handwriting but you still need the official blank in the printer.

Can I download the MVR-180 and MVR-181?

Yes. The MVR-180 (Odometer Disclosure) and MVR-181 (Damage Disclosure) are both public forms available on the NC DMV forms library. Print, fill in by hand, sign, and notarize where required.

Do I really have to handwrite forms if I don't have a DMS?

If you're filling out paper copies from the DMV website or tag office, then yes - you handwrite them or type into the PDF and print, then sign. The MVR-2 has to be hand-fed through your printer since the DMV doesn't post it online. A dealer management system removes the handwriting entirely - every form is generated from your customer and vehicle data and prints in seconds.

What are the DSS forms?

The DSS series (DSS-100, -102, -104, -106, -201, -203) is required by the NC Division of Motor Vehicles for retail sales. They cover the FTC AS-IS disclosure context, optional product disclosures, transaction summary, arbitration agreement, and privacy notice. They are not used on wholesale-only deals. All DSS forms are plain-paper printable.

Do I need a license to use these forms?

Yes - if you sell more than 5 vehicles in a 12-month period in NC, you need a dealer license. See our guide to getting an NC dealer license for the full requirements.
